Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet AMD is less common than dry AMD but far more serious. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the macula and leak fluid or blood. This can cause rapid, significant central vision loss — sometimes within days or weeks.
The key warning sign is sudden distortion — straight lines beginning to look wavy or bent. If you notice this, please call us right away. Wet AMD is a medical urgency. The faster it is treated, the better the outcome.
Request an AppointmentThe good news is that we now have very effective treatments for wet AMD. Anti-VEGF injections — given in the office — can stop the abnormal blood vessel growth, reduce leakage, and in many cases actually improve vision. Most patients require ongoing injections, but the treatment is well-tolerated and highly effective.

Treatment for wet AMD
Anti-VEGF Injections
Medications injected directly into the eye that block the growth of abnormal blood vessels. The gold-standard treatment — highly effective and well-tolerated. Given in the office under local anaesthetic.
Regular Monitoring
OCT imaging at each visit to assess the retina’s response to treatment and adjust the injection schedule accordingly.
Ongoing Management
Most patients need ongoing injections, but the interval can often be extended as the condition stabilizes. Dr. Smithen tailors the schedule to each individual.
Wet AMD is very treatable. With prompt diagnosis and regular anti-VEGF treatment, most patients can maintain their vision and many see meaningful improvement. Dr. Smithen will work with you to find the treatment schedule that works best for your life.
