We welcome referrals from ophthalmologists, optometrists, primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and other providers. We make the referral process as simple as possible — and we keep you informed every step of the way.

A Retina Practice Built Around Your Patients

Retina & Macular Disease Specialists is a boutique private practice. When you refer a patient to Dr. Smithen, you can be confident they will receive unhurried, attentive, expert care — not a rushed appointment at a high-volume clinic.

Dr. Smithen trained at Tufts Medical Center / New England Eye Center and brings deep expertise in the medical management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and the full spectrum of retinal conditions. She does not perform surgery — her focus is entirely on medical retina, which means she is available, accessible, and focused.

We communicate directly with referring providers. After every visit, we send a detailed consultation or follow-up note. We treat your patients the way you would want your own family treated.

Prompt access for your patientsWe see new referrals quickly, with urgent appointments available for acute presentations such as sudden vision loss, flashes and floaters, or suspected retinal detachment.
Detailed consultation reportsWe send a full consultation note to the referring provider after every visit, including examination findings, imaging results, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
Direct communicationDr. Smithen is accessible to referring providers for questions or urgent concerns. We believe in collaborative care.
Co-management welcomeWe are happy to co-manage patients with optometrists and other providers, and will always return care to the referring provider as appropriate.

Send prior records if availableAny prior retinal imaging, OCT scans, or relevant medical records can be faxed to us in advance to help Dr. Smithen prepare for the consultation.

Receive our reportAfter the patient's visit, we will send a full consultation note to your office by fax or your preferred method.

Urgent evaluation for acute PVD, retinal tears, and retinal detachment. Same-day availability for acute presentations.

Diagnosis and monitoring of epiretinal membrane and macular hole, with surgical referral coordination when indicated.

Uveitis-related retinal disease, central serous chorioretinopathy, inherited retinal dystrophies, and more.
