Referring a Patient to Dr. Smithen
We welcome referrals from ophthalmologists, optometrists, primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and other providers. We make the referral process as simple as possible — and we keep you informed every step of the way.
A Retina Practice Built Around Your Patients
Retina & Macular Disease Specialists is a boutique private practice. When you refer a patient to Dr. Smithen, you can be confident they will receive unhurried, attentive, expert care — not a rushed appointment at a high-volume clinic.
Dr. Smithen trained at Tufts Medical Center / New England Eye Center and brings deep expertise in the medical management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and the full spectrum of retinal conditions. She does not perform surgery — her focus is entirely on medical retina, which means she is available, accessible, and focused.
We communicate directly with referring providers. After every visit, we send a detailed consultation or follow-up note. We treat your patients the way you would want your own family treated.
